In 5th grade band they all played percussion first quarter, brass (either trumpet or trombone) second quarter, woodwind (flute or clarinet) third quarter, and they get to choose for fourth quarter. Vanessa did not get to try out each instrument before choosing. She just had to choose one (percussion) from the beginning of 5th grade. I have mixed feelings on this new program. It is nice for them to get a good feel for each section before choosing, but it seems like they aren't progressing since they are learning a new instrument each quarter.
